Insider's Guide to New Orleans - 2010

Tennessee Williams' Legacy

The city’s most famous author has left a few traces around the city. There’s still a street called Desire (but alas no streetcar) in the Bywater neighborhood. You can walk past his house at 1014 Dumaine in the French Quarter. And the annual Tennessee Williams literary festival features a “Stella” shouting contest that brings out the inner Stanley in everyone.

Williams also lived in the French Quarter at 722 Toulouse. It’s said that he started “A Streetcar Named Desire” here, before moving to Florida to finish it.
